Alessandro Raho found choosing a material extremely difficult. To me, this handsome man looks very Roman but he disagreed because he believed he looks very much like his Swedish mother. Then, during virtually the last sitting, he mentioned in passing that his father was, in fact, from Rome. It seemed obvious to portray him in gold as if he were on the side of a coin from Roman antiquity. In 2004, he was commissioned by the National Portrait Gallery, London, to paint a full-length portrait of Dame Judi Dench.
